What’s happening to the sails on the windmill on Wimbledon Common?

Local residents and many visitors will remember that one of the sails to the windmill broke off last year. The other sails were then removed for safety as the structure was then out of balance. Behind the scenes, the volunteers and trustees of the Windmill, as well as the Commons Conservators have been very active and soon visitors to the Common will see the beginning of the restoraNew sail being builttion works to the Windmill.

Volunteers at the Windmill recently visited the workshops of the millwrights
this week to see the progress on the repairs and were fascinated to see what a complex activity this is. We expect the sails to go back up in early autumn and that should be a very exciting event to watch… we will let you know when we have an exact date!

In the mean time, the Windmill is open for business as usual on Saturday afternoon from 2.00pm to 5.00pm and Sunday from 11.00am to 5.00pm.  It is staffed entirely by volunteers and they really need some more support from the community either to help run the museum at the weekends or to help out with occasional family activity days or to help develop and run our education programme.
