The Windmill Nature Trail was created and opened in 2000. It is situated 200 metres east of the Windmill and its large car park.
The trail was created to allow visitors with mobility handicaps the opportunity to enjoy a small but representative section of the Wimbledon Common and Putney Heath. A firm and level footpath winds its way around approximately 800 metres of trail. Trail markers and directional signs are placed throughout the trail.
The site consists of three main habitats, namely grassland, woodland and heath. A wide diversity flora and fauna associated with these habitats make every visit a memorable experience. The emphasis is on retaining the natural character of the area and where improvements have been made, only materials compatible with the local environment are provided for all our visitors.
This is a natural trail and accessibility is subject to seasonal fluctuations in the weather. The Windmill Trail has the most to offer during the months of April through to November. A small guidebook can be purchased during this period from the Ranger's Office. Areas of special interest are identified by markers. Trees, shrubs and wildflowers are well represented and bird life is particularly abundant. To allow visitors time to admire the scenery, rest areas have been created along the route.
During the spring and summer months there should be no inconvenience to those wishing to use the trail. During high winds and prolonged rain, notices informing the public of any risks will be posted. During the winter it is advisable to contact the Ranger's Office between 9 am and 4 pm on 020 8788 7655 before your visit.
Schools and other groups are welcome. Access is free and if required a trail guide booklet, (price £1.50 - not available during November - March) is available from the Ranger's Office. Guided walks for a maximum of 25 people can be arranged for a small fee, (contact the Ranger's Office for charge). At least one month's notice is required.
Organisations using mini-buses catering for the disabled, should contact the Ranger's Office to arrange for special parking, close to the trail.
