There is varied plant life on the Commons, ranging through open grassland to areas of heather, gorse, weeded regions and wet areas. In these wet areas there is a diversity of small, green and inconspicuous, but rare, plants. The wettest areas such as Farm Bog contain bog mosses with other plants rare in London, such as bogbean, bulbous rush, oval sedge, star sedge, water horsetail, alder buckthorn, marsh pennywort and lesser skullcap. Others are lesser spearwort, yellow iris, reedmace, common reed, marsh thistle and gypsywort. Veilwort pallavicinia lyelli has also been found on the Farm Bog site.
The rare plant, Hairy vetchling, was discovered on Wimbledon Common during 2000.

NB This is a poisonous fungus
Because of the growing concern at the disturbance and damage caused by unsolicited fungi gathering during September to November, the Conservators have drawn up a Code of Conduct for fungi collection. This limits the number of authorised fungi forays allowed on the Commons. If you wish to hold a foray on the Commons, please contact the Ranger's Office on 020 8788 7655 or by e-mail
