BioBlitz - Weekend of Nature! Event

BioBlitz - Weekend of Nature!

17th to 18th June 2017 from All Day

Ranger's Office

Our fourth annual BioBlitz - Weekend of Nature will take place over the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June.

Join our local volunteer experts and our staff for some fascinating walks to learn about the flora and fauna of our very special Commons!

Schedule of Events

Saturday 17th June:

5.45pm at the Ranger's Office - Small Mammal Survey - setting the Longworth Humane Traps (see here for details on how these work).

This event is in two parts, on Saturday evening, the Longworth traps are set, and our expert, Alex Learmont from the Surrey Wildlife Trust, will explain how the survey works and what mammals she would hope to attract.  On Sunday morning, bright and early, we visit the traps to record, examine and release any small mammals caught overnight. There is, of course, no guarantee that we will catch anything but we are hopeful!

Places are limited to 12 and booking is essential.  You can book for the evening and/or morning. Click here to book your place

9.15pm - Bat Walk and Moth Evening (Click here to book your place)

Sunday 18th June

6.00am Checking the Small Mammal Traps

8.00am - Bird Walk (Click here to book your place)

9.30am - Opening the Moth Trap

10.30am - General Nature Walks

1.00pm - Talk:  Bees and bee-keeping.

Come along to find out more about the lives of honey bees, their hive and how they manage their amazing world. Did you know that it is the female worker bees that make all the decisions and not the Queen? This 45 minute talk by local bee-keeper, Alison Pelikan, will cover some of the incredible things that bees do and will demonstrate some of the equipment we beekeepers use.

2.00pm - General Nature Walk

Plus lots more going on at the BioBlitz HQ!
