UPDATE ON TENNIS AT PUTNEY LOWER COMMON!
Update 30/10/2025
We had hoped that the resurfacing of the tennis courts at Putney Lower Common would be underway by now, however, the project has been delayed while we confirm planning requirements with Wandsworth Council. We appreciate everyone’s patience and will provide a further update as soon as a revised timetable is available.
The Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators (WPCC) are pleased to announce the appointment of All Star Tennis as the new operator of the Putney Lower Common Tennis Courts. This new partnership marks an exciting step forward for the future of the site, which has long served the local community as a valued outdoor sporting facility.
All five courts are set to undergo a major programme of repair and refurbishment in the Winter, bringing them up to modern playing standards, with the intention of opening Spring 2026.
All Star Tennis will operate an inclusive community focused venue, increasing tennis participation through a programme catered to all age groups and skill levels, ensuring everyone can access and enjoy the facility.
Founded in 1999, All Star Tennis is at the heart of tennis in Wandsworth, delivering exceptional services and a vibrant, fun, professional, community-focused experience on court. Putney Lower Common will become the seventh All Star Tennis location with popular venues at Leaders Gardens, King Georges Park, Wandsworth Park, Wandsworth Common, Tooting Common and Furzedown Rec.
Ben White, Director of All Star Tennis, said: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with WPCC to bring the Putney Lower Common Tennis Courts back into use. We’re committed to delivering a space that will serve the community for years to come. We appreciate everyone’s patience while the necessary repairs are carried out and look forward to welcoming players of all ages and abilities once the site reopens.”
Colin Cooper, Chief Executive of WPCC, commented: “The tennis courts at Putney Lower Common have long been a valued and integral part of the Commons, and their full restoration is a key priority. WPCC is pleased to be partnering with All Star Tennis to ensure that the site reopens with high-quality, accessible facilities. The inclusion of pay-and-play access on up to five courts will help ensure wide benefit across the local community.”
A re-opening date for Putney Lower Common will be confirmed in due course. Further updates will be published here and also on the All Star Tennis website or you can sign up our respective newsletters: WPCC, All Star Tennis

We are currently in negotiations with our preferred provider, who will be responsible for operating the courts once they reopen. The process is taking longer than anticipated due to the significant refurbishment required to bring the courts up to standard.
Earlier lasts winter, we commissioned a specialist consultancy to assess the condition of the courts and the wider facility. Their findings were clear: two courts are in extremely poor condition and unplayable, while the remaining three are also below acceptable standards. Additionally, all net post holes have been cemented in, making every court unusable in their current state.
This level of deterioration was more than expected and the cost of refurbishing all five courts is substantial, and contractor availability is limited during this peak season, which has added further delays.
Despite these challenges, we remain fully committed to reopening the courts as a high-quality community tennis facility. However, we are unable to provide a definitive timeline until contracts are signed with both the provider and the refurbishment contractors.
We appreciate your continued patience and understanding. At this stage, changing direction is not an option — we’re focused on delivering a long-term solution that meets the needs of the community.
