Social media reports of blue/green algae in the Commons' ponds

The Ranger's Office has been advised that there have been incidents of dogs with sickness/diarrhea issues and social media posts are suggesting that this is because of blue/green algae in the ponds on Wimbledon Common.

The possibility of this being related to blue green algae at this time of year is very remote and we are not aware of any in the ponds.

Algae tends to form in ponds in the summer when there is little water movement and higher temperatures. However, with the mild weather we are experiencing this winter, there is likely to be all sorts of bugs around in any open spaces that you walk, particularly in muddy areas and puddles.

If your dog is showing any signs of sickness/diarrhea that is cause for concern we recommend contacting your vet.
