Reports of Alabama Rot on the Commons - Updated

“Alabama Rot”

Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (CRGV)

19th April 2016 - As of 19th April, we still have no confirmation regarding this suspected case of CRGV.  We will advise as soon as we hear but we are led to believe it will be at least another week/10 days.

On Monday 11th April, the Ranger’s Office received a report that a dog walked on the Commons had died with symptoms similar to those of Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy, more commonly known as CRGV or “Alabama Rot”.

It is important to note that the case has not yet been confirmed, and test results will not be received by the vet dealing with the case for at least 7 days.  We also understand that the dog is often walked in other areas, away from the Commons.

Little is currently known about the disease and how it is spread or contracted but a veterinary specialist, Anderson Moores, has issued information for dog owners and a copy of this can be found here.  This gives information on symptoms to look out for, which include unexplained redness, sores or swelling of the skin.  Early veterinary intervention is critical.

Our sympathies and thoughts are with the owners of the dog concerned.
