Update on Putney Lower Common Tennis Courts

We are currently in negotiations with our preferred provider, who will be responsible for operating the courts once they reopen. The process is taking longer than anticipated due to the significant refurbishment required to bring the courts up to standard.

Earlier this winter, we commissioned a specialist consultancy to assess the condition of the courts and the wider facility. Their findings were clear: two courts are in extremely poor condition and unplayable, while the remaining three are also below acceptable standards. Additionally, all net post holes have been cemented in, making every court unusable in their current state.

This level of deterioration was more than expected  and the cost of refurbishing all five courts is substantial, and contractor availability is limited during this peak season, which has added further delays.

Despite these challenges, we remain fully committed to reopening the courts as a high-quality community tennis facility. However, we are unable to provide a definitive timeline until contracts are signed with both the provider and the refurbishment contractors.

We appreciate your continued patience and understanding. At this stage, changing direction is not an option — we’re focused on delivering a long-term solution that meets the needs of the community.
