VJ Day 80th Anniversary Walk & Talk

The Wimbledon Village and Common Walk & Talk group will be hosting a walk of remembrance on Saturday 16th August to commemorate the significant 80th anniversary of VJ Day - Victory over Japan day and the official end of the Second World War (actually Friday 15th).

This special event will honour and remember the bravery and sacrifice of all those who served in the war's Pacific campaign and will include:

-          Personal reflections of post war days from the Far East

-          A poem titled “Nation Shall Speak Unto Nation”

-          Reading from Elizabeth Beresford (creator of the Wombles) who was a Wren in London on the day VJ was announced

-          The Reverend Farodoye: "Blessed are the peace makers", a commitment to peace

The walk will also celebrate the present, particularly the 2nd anniversary of the Walk & Talk group, a local initiative that has helped strengthen our community through conversation, connection, and shared steps. Post-walk celebrations will continue with refreshments, coffee and cakes, in the Village.

All are welcome. Come with family, bring a friend, walk your dog, or just as you are.
