Full Time Position – Mounted Keeper

£31,844 to £37,773 (the starting salary will be in this range depending on experience and background of the successful candidate) + accommodation will be provided.

Wimbledon and Putney Commons were established in 1871 by an independent Act of Parliament that created a unique constitutional framework for this cherished open space. Under the 1871 Act, stewardship is provided by eight Conservators and funding provided by a local levy. The land is protected by statue and regulated through byelaws.

As a result of the unique constitutional arrangements, the Commons enjoy a strong connection with the local community, the support of which is critical to the day-to-day functioning of the Commons. Through the Act, the Commons are also afforded a high degree of independence, which has insulated them from many of the reforms that have impacted other open spaces over the decades.

The Commons are still cared for by a dedicated team of 25 staff led by the Chief Executive, most of whom live on site, and patrolled by Mounted Keepers; both features are critical in maintaining the sense of security and safety that defines this special resource.

We currently have a vacancy within our Mounted Keeper team. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual and a professional character to work in one of London’s premier open spaces.

Responsibilities will include carrying out mounted horse patrols, and enforcement of bylaws and regulations, also carrying out related tasks to support estate management.

You must be a competent horse person.  Teamwork and good interpersonal skills are essential requirements as is the ability to work weekends on a regular shift roster covering seven days per week. Experience of enforcement work, police, military, or security work would be advantageous.
