150th Anniversary of the Commons

2021 marks the 150th anniversary of the date on which the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Act 1871 received Royal Assent, and brought the Commons as we know them today into being.

Message from the Chairman of the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators

It is with enormous regret that the Conservators have taken the difficult decision to postpone the 150th Anniversary Games Day that was planned for Sunday 15 August 2021.  Although it had been hoped that the lifting of restrictions on 19 July 2021 would allow the long-planned series of celebratory events for the 150th anniversary to finally go ahead, the recent developments with the pandemic and the impact on staff of the increased transmission in particular have put at risk the holding of large public events on the Commons.

In taking this decision, the considerable thought and endless hours of planning by all those organising the events has been deeply recognised and the Conservators wish to express their most sincere gratitude to all those involved.  The sense of disappointment that we all feel is palpable.  Needless to say, this important year has not unfolded as had been originally anticipated and it is hoped that conditions will allow us to properly hold the celebrations when times are better.

Postponed - Sunday 15 August 2021 - Commons Sesquicentenary Games Day - A celebration of the games and sporting activities that have been played on the Commons over the last 150 years. To include Cricket, Rugby, Football, Running, Hockey, Riding, Cycling, Bowls and Tennis, all which have historic links with the Commons);  Further details here

Postponed - Reception at the Houses of Parliament - The Conservators have also regrettably agreed to postpone the evening reception on the Terrace Pavilion of the Palace of Westminster that was scheduled for 28 October 2021.  A significant part of the evening’s programme was a tour of the Houses of Parliament, but we have been advised that these have been cancelled until early 2022.  It is hoped that a new date for the reception will be arranged that will allow the  tours to to be a part of the evening.

Early 2022 - Afternoon Tea at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, with a performance by the Wimbledon Civic Theatre Trust of a specially commissioned play on the history of the formation of the Commons.

We look forward to welcoming you to our celebrations when we are able to go ahead.
