Wimbledon and Putney Commons

150th Anniversary Celebrations – Games Day

We are delighted that our celebratory Games Day will be taking place on the Commons on Sunday 22 May 2022 from 9am until 5 pm.

Come and join us for a celebration of the games and sports that have been played on the Commons throughout its history.


  • Thames Hare and Hounds “Dash for the Splash” 10k run (see link below for details on how to take part)
  • Family bike ride from Putney to the Windmill (See details below on how to take part)
  • Arena demonstrations of horse-riding, dog flyball, stoolball, football and rugby
  • Tug of War, football penalty shoot-out against AFC Wimbledon’s Haydon the Womble and golf putting open to all!
  • Cricket matches at Putney Lower Common and Putney Heath
  • Lacrosse at REMPF
  • Enjoy a self-guided Wellness Walk or find the clues on a Treasure Hunt Trail!

With events throughout the day, everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun or relax as you watch the arena demonstrations. 

There will be food stalls on site along with Pimms by Hemmingways and beer by the Wimbledon Brewery or bring a picnic!

Opening ceremony


Running:  10 km run - Dash for the Splash, open to all, organised by Thames Hare and Hounds (see poster below for details on how to enter)


Golf:  Children's golf putting, open to all, organised by Wimbledon Common Golf Club


Walking:  Historical games treasure hunt family walk and a self guided mindfulness walk, open to all, organised by Friends of Wimbledon and Putney Commons


Flyball:  Demonstration by SW19 Swifts


Cycling:  Putney to the Windmill, open to all, organised by Wandsworth Cycling Campaign  (see poster below for details on how to enter)


Lacrosse:  Match, West London vs Spencer Lacrosse Club (Richardson Evans Memorial Playing Fields)


Horse Riding:  Demonstration by Wimbledon Village Stables


Stoolball:  Match, Wimbledon and Putney Commons Staff vs Others


Cricket:  Matches, Putney Cricket Club vs Bricklayers Arms (Putney Lower Common) and
Roehampton Cricket Club vs Wandsworth Cowboys (Putney Heath)


Traditional Morris Dancing:  Performance by Greensleeves


Football:  Penalty shoot-out and pick up junior kick about with Haydon the mascot, open to all, organised by AFC Wimbledon


Rugby:  Demonstration of girls rugby, walking rugby and inclusive rugby, by Wimbledon Rugby Football Club


Tug of War:  Open to all, organised by FIT8

Holding an Event on Wimbledon and Putney Commons

As the Commons are now a popular location for events, you will need to seek permission from the Ranger's Office before organising any formal or semi-formal event on or across the Commons.  This is to ensure that there is no clash of events that would spoil the enjoyment of participants, or negatively impact our visitors, other users or  indeed have a negative impact on the Commons - a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Whilst we are limited to the size and type of event we can host here on the Commons, we are always happy to see if we can help.  Please complete the Enquiry Form and one of our team will get back to you to discuss your request.  

As a charity, we do charge for events on the Commons.  The charges will depend on the nature of the event.  Please contact the Ranger's Office for further information.
