Message from the Chairman of the WImbledon and Putney Commons Conservators

It is with enormous regret that the Conservators have taken the difficult decision to postpone the 150th Anniversary Games Day that was planned for Sunday 15 August 2021.  Although it had been hoped that the lifting of restrictions on 19 July 2021 would allow the long-planned series of celebratory events for the 150th anniversary to finally go ahead, the recent developments with the pandemic and the impact on staff of the increased transmission in particular have put at risk the holding of large public events on the Commons.

In taking this decision, the considerable thought and endless hours of planning by all those organising the events has been deeply recognised and the Conservators wish to express their most sincere gratitude to you for your important contribution and the commitment it represents.  The sense of disappointment that we all feel is palpable.  Needless to say, this important year has not unfolded as had been originally anticipated and it is hoped that conditions will allow us to properly hold the celebrations when times are better.

The Act of Parliament that brought the Commons into being as we know them today received Royal Assent on 16 August 1871.  To celebrate this momentous occasion, the Friends' Committee are organising a celebratory Games Day!

The 1871 Act clearly stated that the Commons were established “for the purposes of recreation and exercise” and in recognition of this aim, the first event of the celebrations, taking place on the eve of the 150th anniversary, will be a celebration of the sports that have been played on the Commons throughout our history - including golf, cricket, running, stoolball, and hopefully many other sports too. Put the date in your diaries and come along and help us celebrate!

The current outline of events is as follows:

09.00    Opening ceremony
09.30-11.00 Running race, organised by the Thames Hare and Hounds
Link to enter: The Splash for the Dash
