Nature Trail

As the world was celebrating the turn of the new millennium, the year 2000 saw the Commons celebrate the arrival of the Windmill Nature Trail.

Just 200 metres east of the Windmill and its large car park, the trail was created to allow visitors with mobility handicaps the opportunity to enjoy a small but representative section of Wimbledon Common and Putney Heath. The firm, flat footpath winds its way around 800 metres of nature trail, signposted by trail markers and directional signs, to guide visitors on their mini adventure around the Windmill Nature Trail. Plus, to help you make the most of your time on the trail, visitors can buy a small guidebook from the Ranger's Office and areas of special interest are signposted by markers.

The site is home to three main habitats: grassland, woodland and heath, each with their own impressive spread of flora, fauna and scenery that make for a memorable trip around the trail. Packed with trees, shrubs and wildflowers, the trail is also a particular favourite for budding bird-watchers, with many different types of our feathered friends nesting in the area.

We’ve even created designated rest areas along the route to make sure that you have all the space, time and energy you need to take in all of the trail’s natural treats!

Every effort has been made to make sure the area is in keeping with the natural character of the area by using environmentally friendly materials to carry out improvements, even down to the smallest details.

Schools and other groups are more than welcome to come and enjoy everything the Windmill Nature Trail has to offer as it’s a fantastic spot for learning about nature and natural habitats. Access is free and a guide to the Nature Trail is available at the Ranger's Office for just £2.  Full of facts and information, it also provides identification tasks for our younger visitors.

Guided walks for a maximum of 25 people can be arranged for a small fee (contact the Ranger's Office for details).
