Path Improvements - Autumn 2023

We are delighted that, thanks to the generous donations made by visitors and a grant from Southern Western Railway’s Customer and Communities Improvement Fund, work to resurface and improve four main paths on Wimbledon Common and Putney Heath will begin later this month. We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated to make this work possible. Resurfacing the paths will greatly improve the experience of exploring the Commons.

The four paths are (map below):

1. Windmill Road path

2. Inner Park Ride (shared cycle route)

3. Ladies Mile (shared cycle route)

4. Green Ride (shared cycle route)

Regular users of these routes will know they become muddy during the wetter months, leading to puddles and potholes which when walked around results in the path widening and neighbouring habitats eroding. At some points, Green Ride has widened from 2.5m to nearly 9m! So, by creating better paths for everyone to use all year round, we can also help nature grow back.

The work is scheduled to begin from Monday 25th September 2023 and will take a couple of months to complete. During this time there will be heavy machinery operating in the area and for safety reasons the paths will be closed to the public when work is taking place.  Alternative walking and cycling routes will be provided and we kindly ask you to use these signposted routes whilst the work is underway. We apologise if your usual route is affected but hope you enjoy exploring other areas.
