The Big Give's Green Match Fund

Between Thursday 18th and 25th April, all donations you make via our Big Give campaign page will be DOUBLED!

We’re taking part in the Big Give’s Green Match Fund this April when we hope to raise £10,000 to conserve the heathlands on the Commons.

Heathlands are important for biodiversity as they support a range of species, yet this habitat is now rare in London, with Wimbledon and Putney Commons being home to some of the last remaining fragments in the capital.

By making a donation during the campaign, you can help to ensure that this special habitat is not lost. This is a brilliant opportunity to double your impact.

Left unmanaged, the Commons’ heathland will gradually be lost to woodland and bracken. The lizards, birds and invertebrates that depend on it would lose the habitat they need to survive. Without grazing, conserving heathland has to be done manually and is highly labour intensive. Whilst WPCC is lucky to have volunteers that support this work more equipment is needed to ensure their hard work has a lasting impact.

If you make a donation during the Green Match Fund campaign week, that means twice as much support for the volunteers and staff who work so hard to protect the heathlands.

With your support, we can better equip the teams to restore this threatened habitat. With new specialist tools, we can better manage the scrub and remove the invasive Turkey oak stumps and saplings which currently have to be constantly cut back.

Turkey oak is a fast growing species of oak which has aggressively colonised many parts of the countryside leading to the displacement of native flora. It is far less ecologically valuable to British wildlife than our native English oak.

How to take part and double your donation

Between 18th and 25th April we will be fundraising and asking if you can help. You’ll see posters on site and online and we will lead guided walks around the heathland. You can also help by sharing our social media posts and spreading the word to everyone you know that loves nature in London.

Please save the date to make a donation during the campaign week when your donation will be doubled.
