100 Years of Remembrance - Battle's Over

Wimbledon and Putney Commons is playing its part in Battle’s Over, an international commemoration marking 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of World War I.  

Two events are taking place on the Commons to mark this significant moment in our history and all are invited to join us.

6am Sunday 11th November
Wimbledon Village War Memorial
The Battle's Over - A Nation's Tribute

Organised by a local resident, a lone piper at the Wimbledon Village Memorial will join over 1,000 pipers nationwide to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the dawn of the day on which the 1918 armistice was signed and the guns fell silent after four horrific years of warfare.

6.30pm at the Wimbledon Windmill
The Battle's Over - A Cry for Peace

Given the historic and important role played by Wimbledon and Putney Commons during WWI, it is fitting that Wimbledon and Putney Commons participate in the national commemoration event that is being organised for the evening of 11 November 2018, entitled Battle's Over.  

Hosted by the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators in collaboration with the Wimbledon Windmill Museum, the event will start with a walk across the Common from the Wimbledon and Roehampton War Memorials, meeting at the Wimbledon Common Windmill for 6.30pm, with each procession lighting candles just before arrival at the Windmill.  (See flyer below or click here)

Please join us for either of the walks or you can meet at the Windmill where the car park will remain open.  If you have a bell, please bring it with you for the bell-ringing.
